Wall Street banks are settling claims stemming from a nationwide investigation into allegations banks peddled 15 billion dollars worth of auction-rate securities as investments that were as liquid as cash. After the financial crisis began in 2007, investors were unable to sell the securities. UBS, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase and Wachovia and three other Wall Street banks will pay $360 million in fines. |

For cash rewards, some Morgan Stanley traders have informed "hedge funds" managers of mergers and acquisitions on some stocks before they are made public. The prosecutor of Manhattan and Securities and Exchange Commission sue 14 traders in a civil prosecution. The Justice Department sues 13 traders with a penal prosecution. More than 23 million dollars could have been gained unduly. |

Morgan Stanley agreed to pay a $1.5 million fine to settle charges of widespread abuses in the auction rate market for municipal and corporate bonds. Between January 2003 and June 2004, the firms were involved in improper placement and manipulation of orders and also provided some customers with information giving them an advantage over others in determining what rate to bid. |

A été condamnée hier à verser 604,3 millions de dollars à un investisseur qu'elle aurait induit en erreur. En 1998, Ronald Perelman avait accepté une fusion entre sa société Coleman (matériel de camping) et Sunbeam (petit électroménager). L'ensemble devait faire faillite en 2001 suite à un scandale de fraude comptable. Ayant perdu 680 millions dans ce placement, ce financier avait alors décidé de se retourner contre Morgan Stanley en estimant que la banque-conseil de Sunbeam savait que cette société était au bord du dépôt de bilan à l'époque de la fusion. Morgan stanley devra verser en outre 850 millions de dollars de dédommagement. |
