The European Commission imposed a fine of 1.4 billion euros to 4 producer of flat glass for automotive, accused of having shared the market between 1998 and 2003. Saint-Gobain will pay 896 million euro fine plus 60% for recidivism because the group had already been convicted on the market in 1984 in Italy and the Benelux in 1988. The other members of the cartel are Pilkington, Asahi and Soliver. |

2007 |
The European Commission fined the four members of a flat glass cartel 486,9 million euros. The culprits are the American Guardian (148 million euros of fine), the British Pilkington (140 million), French Saint-Gobain (133,9 million) and Japanese Asahi (65 million). The agreement related to flat glass used in the sector of construction (basic float glass, laminated glass, glass untreated used for the manufacture of the mirrors...). According to the Commission, between the beginning of 2004 and at the beginning of 2005, the four companies "managed to increase the prices or to stabilize them by means of a series of meetings and other contacts illicit". In 2004, their sales in Europe with independent customers, who transform this flat glass into windows with double glazing or glass fireproofed for the large buildings and the dwellings, reached 1,7 billion euros. "the Commission will not tolerate that the consumers and the intermediate companies are injured and deprived of the advantages of the single market by companies which collude to fix prices",declared the Competition Commissioneer Neelie Kroes. |
