2007United States of America : Mirant signed a consent agreement in 2003 with the Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and the state Department of Environmental Conservation to upgrade the pollution controls of its Stony Point plant but failed to respect it. The plant emit high levels of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Both contribute to acid rain, which has left many of New York's lakes, rivers and streams unable to support plant and aquatic life. Both emissions also help cause smog, which along with acid rain, contributes to public health problems, including asthma.Lower Hudson Online
