ILO violation 1, 29 : Some 3,000 workers from a Hong Kong-owned furniture factory in Shenzhen staged a protest on 3 April against long working hours and poor working conditions. The demonstration was dispersed by hundreds of riot police. The workers at the Ruifeng Timber claimed they worked 12 hours a day including three hours of "voluntary overtime work" – but were refused overtime pay. They had two days off a month contrary to the legal requirement of four and were required to obtain permits to go to the bathroom or drink water otherwise they could be fined up to 20 Yuan. Workers claimed that they had previously been beaten by the factory’s security guards when they had tried to air their grievances.:
